Creating A New Story

When you create a story with Story Patch, you will be presented with this screen. Each of the buttons on the screen does the following:

  • Tap for instructions--As the name implies, tap this button to get instructions on starting your story.
  • Tap here to write a story without any help--Tap this button to jump right into Story Patch and create a story from scratch. You will be taken straight to the story editor and can begin crafting your story.
  • Tap here to choose a theme and build a story with help--Tap here to use one of Story Patch's themes to get you started. Themes include fun events, like your birthday or getting a new pet. After you select a theme, Story Patch will ask a series of questions that will be used to build your story. Once the story is created, all you have to do is illustrate the story with the pictures included in Story Patch.

When you create a new story, here are a few hints to keep in mind:
  • Story Patch does not require you to enter a name for your story. By default, your story is named "My Story." You can use the story manager to rename stories if you want to use a different title (tap "Manage your stories" from the Home Screen to open the story manager).
  • Make sure you answer all of the questions from Story Patch when building a story from a theme.
  • As you tap the red buttons along the path on the story creation screen and answer each question, you will see the buttons turn from red to green.
  • After you answer all of the questions along the path about a particular theme, tap the "GO!" button to begin adding illustrations to the story.

Editing Your Story

Story Patch provides you with many ways to edit your story and make your tale come to life. Below you will see examples of how to use each of these features.
Adding Text

To add text to your story, just tap at the top of the page where it says "Tap here to enter some text." Story Patch will bring up the keyboard and you can enter any text that you want. To dismiss the keyboard, just use the dismiss button on the bottom right of the keyboard, or tap anywhere on the grayed out area of the page.

If you ever want to edit the text later on, just tap at the top of the page again, and the keyboard will appear. This works even if there is no text at the top of the screen!
Adding Illustrations

Adding illustrations is very simple. Just tap on a category in the Tools menu and scroll down to find the illustration you want in one of the sub-categories. When you see the illustration you want to add to your story, just tap on it once to add it to your page.
Configuring Illustrations

Story Patch provides a number of ways for you to configure the illustrations so your story looks exactly the way you want it to look. Give these basic configuration options a try:
  • To move an illustration, just drag it with one finger.
  • To make an illustration bigger, place two fingers on it and pinch outward.
  • To make an illustration smaller, place two fingers on it and pinch inward.
  • To rotate an illustration, place two fingers on the illustration and turn it.
Configuring Illustrations--Advanced

In addition to the basic configurations, Story Patch offers some other ways to configure your images. To access these features, press and hold your finger on an illustration. Story Patch will bring up a menu that allows you to do the following:
  • Delete the illustration--If you decide you don't want a particular illustration in your story, tap the "Delete" button in the popup menu.
  • Flip the illustration--Is the illustration facing the wrong direction? Tap the "Flip" button in the popup menu and Story Patch will insert the mirror image of the illustration.
  • Change the order of images--Do you have an illustration that is covered by another illustration? Tap the "Move To Back" button and an illustration will be placed behind all of the other illustrations. Tap the "Move To Front" button and it will be placed on top of all the other illustrations
If you change your mind and do not need to use one of these options, just tap anywhere outside of the popup menu and it will disappear.
Creating a Custom Story Character

Story Patch gives you the ability to create customized characters for your story. To access this feature, select "Story Characters" from the Tools menu and then tap "BUILD-A-CHARACTER." Choose the type of character you want and then edit your character's features in the window that pops up.

Use the pickers at the top of the window to select a facial expression and the pose for your character. At the bottom of the window, use the picker to select a trait (like eye color), and then click on a color to make the change. The preview window shows you what your character will look like, so feel free to play around and get your character just the way you want it to look.

When you are finished, click the "Done" button and your character will be placed in the story.
Editing An Old Story

If you ever decide you would like to edit an old story, just click on the "Edit a story" button from Story Patch's home screen. Story Patch will display a list with all of the stories you have created. On the left of each row is a picture of a book that shows you the title of each story.
